In order to save a man’s hand, a shocking technique was used which required it to be sewn into his stomach!

The Doctors discuss a man in Brazil who was severely injured in a freak workplace accident that left very little skin on his hand. In order to save it from amputation, it was placed inside the man’s abdomen to provide it with a protective environment for healing. The man was required to keep his hand inside body for 6 weeks.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon says this concept, while visually startling, is a sound medical practice that is used frequently.

“That’s a wound healing principal we use quite often. It’s a principal that has been around for years and years,” he explains. “When you have something that is missing, like skin coverage, and you need to get it covered, you will bury it under live tissue.”

Dr. Ordon explains that in 6 weeks, when the man’s hand is removed, it will not appear magically like an uninjured hand, but it will provide doctors with an opportunity to further help him.

“It will have granulation over it, which then you can put a skin graft on top of it and it will take care of the problem,” he continues.
