We’ve heard horror stories about kidney stones: about how painful they can be; about the agonizing ways that you need to get rid of them.

Lucky for us, David Wartinger, a urological surgeon, made a bizarre and unexpected discovery: riding a roller coaster can actually help you get rid of a kidney stone. This isn’t a joke. Wartinger got some real scientific evidence to back it up, and even published his findings in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.

He first became committed to the study after hearing that one of his patients “got off [a] ride immediately, and passed a kidney stone. He got on the same coaster, and passed another stone. He rode it a third time, and passed three stones in a row. That was just too compelling to ignore,” said Wartinger.

And so, he built a fake kidney and took it on a roller coaster (Big Thunder Mountain Railroad) 240 times, waiting to see how many times it would pass a stone. Believe it or not, he discovered that you have a 70 per cent chance of passing a kidney stone if you sit in the last seat of a roller coaster whereas you have a significantly lower chance of passing one if you sit at the front.

“You don’t have to go on the crazy stuff that inverts, and goes 90 miles an hour. Anything vibratory, sustained and rough will work,” he said.

And just guess where he did his study… Disney’s Magic Kingdom! Forget having surgery for those kidney stones.* Instead, go to a theme park and have a freaking blast.

Rx: Ride a roller coaster of choice until healed.
