Have you ever watched a doctor on TV and wished you had that life? While most shows probably don’t accurately capture the real life of a physician — except for Scrubs, that has to be real — they are fun to watch.

To all of the amazing physicians we work with every day, we know you are even better than your TV counterparts, but hope you have a favorite TV doctor or two. Here’s some of our favorites.

    1. Hawkeye — M*A*S*H

Captain Benjamin Franklin Pierce (Alan Alda), better known by his nickname Hawkeye, was the chief surgeon of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) during the Korean War. Although best known for his quick wit and weary cynicism, Hawkeye also understands the importance of keeping a level head when treating the critically wounded and shows an empathy for his patients that is admirable.

    2. J.D. — Scrubs

John “J.D.” Dorian (Zach Braff) is a quirky and caring doctor with a penchant for daydreaming. His charisma and sympathetic nature give him a leg up in the bedside manner department. However, he’s at his best when working alongside his BFF Dr. Chris Turk. J.D. has taught us that humor is an essential component in both your personal and professional life.

    3. Dana Scully — The X-Files

Need someone who can stitch you up and investigate the unknown? Look no further than Dr. Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). She has a passion for science and finding the truth. Although she finds her true calling as a FBI agent, she still relies on her M.D. to investigate the paranormal.

    4. McDreamy — Grey’s Anatomy

During his time at Seattle Grace, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) was the top neurosurgeon around. Add into the mix his charm and compassionate nature (not to mention that heart-melting smile) and it’s no wonder they call him McDreamy.

    5. House — House M.D.

He may be a bit grumpy and cynical, but Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is a brilliant diagnostician with a knack for solving the unsolvable. His keen understanding of medicine combined with his tenacity has led him to find lifesaving diagnoses for many patients.

    6. Dr. Hibbert — Simpsons

As the Simpsons’ longtime family physician, Dr. Julius Hibbert has seen a lot over the years. Although he’s the most competent physician in Springfield, he has a tendency to laugh (sometime inappropriately) at nearly every situation. Still, he’s kind-hearted and slightly less dysfunctional than the rest of the town.

    7. The Literal Doctor — Arrested Development

Dr. Fishman, also known as the Literal Doctor, has a tendency to turn phrases on their heads. His literal nature results in him delivering good news as bad and bad news as good to the Bluth family.

    8. Miranda Bailey — Grey’s Anatomy

Seattle Grace’s Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) may not be McDreamy, but her talent as a surgeon, no-nonsense demeanor, and determination earn her a spot on our list. She may be a little abrasive at times (they nicknamed her The Nazi), but she’s fiercely loyal to her patients and colleagues.

    9. Doug Ross — ER

Not many could resist the charismatic Dr. Ross (George Clooney), not even the ER nurses. But charisma aside, Dr. Ross is a passionate doctor who puts the welfare of his patients, especially children, above his career.

    10. Dr. Quinn — Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman

Dr. Michaela “Mike” Quinn (Jane Seymour) is a pioneer in more ways than one. She stood up to adversity and showed Colorado Springs that she was the best doctor around — and she did it all in a corset. Her tenacity, brilliant medical skills, and resiliency make her the MacGyver of the frontier. And the cherry on top, she was a locum tenens physician before locum tenens was cool.

    11. Dr. Watson — Sherlock Holmes

Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) is the perfect foil to Sherlock — steadfast, patient, and empathetic. But he also has a hunger for action and adventure, which makes him a good candidate to be Sherlock’s best friend. Plus, he worked locum tenens early in his career with Sherlock, so we love him even more.
