Nearly two-thirds of practicing physicians (65 percent) still have medical school debt, and just 10 percent of those physicians expect to pay it off in the next two years, according to a national survey of 500 physicians conducted by Weatherby Healthcare, a locum tenens physician staffing company. The survey showed about a third of physicians who have medical school debt have more than $250,000 to pay off. For many physicians this debt was in addition to other debt from buying a home or raising a family. Of the 35 percent of respondents who had paid off their student loans, 47 percent did so in two years. Those who successfully paid off their debt said they consolidated their debt, managed finances and sought additional work. Source
