The US is currently going through a wave of lifting restrictions on cannabis, marking a historic change of policy at individual state levels since it was originally federally outlawed in 1970.

However, while many states now allow its use in varying degrees, from medical to fully recreational, it is yet to be decriminalized at a federal level. A bill was recently passed by the House of Representatives to decriminalize the use of cannabis, but this must now pass the Senate, which looks much less optimistic.
