A 3-year-old boy in Missouri had a stroke after testing positive for COVID-19, according to NBC News. He’s now recuperating and expected to make a full recovery.

The toddler had a blood clot and underwent surgery. The stroke could be an example of the neurological issues associated with the coronavirus.

“The COVID diagnosis is important because we think the reason why [patients] with COVID, including the child, have strokes and a variety of other problems is that they have propensity to form clots,” Camilo Gomez, MD, a neurologist at the University of Missouri Women and Children’s Hospital, told KSN-TV, an NBC affiliate.

At first, the toddler stopped eating and drinking, so his parents took him to a local clinic last week to get tested. After a COVID-19 diagnosis, his speech slurred, and he couldn’t move his right arm and leg. Doctors found a blockage in the toddler’s brain and confirmed that he had a stroke because of a lack of blood supply to the left side of the brain.

After doctors removed the clot, the boy’s speech came back. Now he’s undergoing rehabilitation to improve his speech and recover his ability to move his limbs before going home next week, the news outlet reported.

“There’s really no other case like this,” Paul Carney, MD, a neurologist at the hospital who diagnosed the toddler, told the news station.

“If this had been anybody over the age of 40 or 60, they would have probably had a very different outcome,” he said.
