With positive vital signs such as low cost of living and inexpensive tuition, 5 countries have the best prognosis for being affordable destinations in which to pursue a medical degree (but Malaysia is not one of them)

    China

Its profusion of natural and man-made attractions beckons to one and all, its economy and society are among the most vibrant in the world, and its universities stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the globe’s most reputable education institutions. So what’s stopping you from pursuing a medical degree in China? Well, nothing! China is one of the most affordable study destinations in the world: tuition fees are the cheapest among the nations in this list, and the cost of living in China is considerably lower than other education hotspots, especially in the West. The Ringgit (though currently in the dumps) will go a lot further in China, and any and every modern amenity imaginable is available to foreign students. Onward, ho!

    Tuition fees (per year): US$5,000 – US$7,500
    Living expenses (per year): US$2,600 – US$4,700
    Total cost (5 years): US$38,000 – US$60,500

    Romania

From ancient castles and fortresses, to stunning natural landscapes and a snug proximity to Western Europe’s major capitals – Romania, birthplace of Count Dracula himself, is a magnificent tourist destination. Thanks to a range of favourable factors, it’s also an affordable country in which to study for your medical degree. The cost of living is one of the lowest in the entire continent, and tuition fees are extremely competitive. Furthermore, Romania’s higher education institutions have earned stellar international reviews, and most of the country’s medical universities offer 6-year general medicine programs in English.

    Tuition fees (per year): US$4,000 – US$6,500
    Living expenses (per year): US$3,200 – US$5,200
    Total cost (6 years): US$43,200 – US$70,200

    Russia

The pros of studying medicine in the globe’s largest country are abundant: world-class medical universities, low living costs and a rainbow of attractions that includes luxurious palaces, majestic mountains, vibrant cities and standard-setting arts and cultural centres. The majority of courses at Russian universities are taught in the native tongue – but many institutions offer one-year English preparatory courses for international students.

    Tuition fees (per year): US$3,000 – US$5,500
    Living expenses (per year): US$4,800 – US$6,600
    Total cost (6 years): US$46,800 – US$72,600

    Czech Republic

With the breathtaking city of Prague (the Paris of Eastern Europe) as the jewel in its crown, the Czech Republic is regarded as one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It attractiveness to prospective medical students must also be underscored: the country’s cost of living, as well as university tuition, are even lower than in Russia. At the internationally-ranked Charles University, fees amount to an average US$13,000 per year – not a negligible amount, but certainly affordable when compared to the US, or even Malaysia. Most medical universities offer 6-year general medicine programs in English, along with Czech programs.

    Tuition fees (per year): US$10,080 – US$13,600
    Living expenses (per year): US$4,000 – US$7,000
    Total cost (6 years): US$84,480 – US$123,600

    Poland

The geographical heart of Europe, Poland’s propinquity to Western Europe’s major capitals makes it a great hub in which to be based. But the country itself throbs with culture, history and life – and luckily for prospective students, its cost of living is comparable to that of Czech Republic. Medical university fees are relatively affordable, typically around US$10,000 per year, and most Polish medical universities offer 6-year general medicine programs in English.

    Tuition fees (per year): US$9,000
    Living expenses (per year): US$4,000 – US$7,000
    Total cost (6 years): US$78,000 – US$96,000

If you're a medical student, share with us how much is your tuition fees per year?
