Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams said the new scholarships, available in Port Macquarie will be awarded to junior doctors who start advanced skills training in the NSW Rural Generalist Medical Training Program (RGTP).

"The Rural Generalist Medical Training Program plays a key role in developing a medical workforce with advanced skills to serve our local communities," Mrs Williams said.

"We welcome the introduction of these new scholarships to further encourage and support trainees to embark on fulfilling rural careers with exposure to a wide, varied and interesting range of clinical practice."

In 2020, the Mid North Coast Local Health District has a range of RGTP positions available in the speciality areas of Mental Health, Paediatrics and Emergency Medicine in Port Macquarie.

"Successful applicants will join a passionate cohort of health professionals at Port Macquarie Base Hospital who are committed to providing our local communities with access to quality and specialised healthcare that's close to home.

"We encourage Junior Doctors considering a rural career to apply," Mrs Williams said.

Recruitment continues for 2020 with trainees commencing advanced skills training through HETI's RGTP in 2020 receiving the $3000 scholarship. Those already recruited for 2020 will also receive the scholarship.

The state-wide Rural Generalist Medical Training Program, managed by the Health Education and Training Institute (HETI), provides trainees with advanced skills in the areas of anaesthetics, obstetrics, mental health, palliative care, emergency medicine and paediatrics.
