As an international medical graduate (IMG), you likely have many questions about which programs can help you receive quality USMLE prep, so you can take (and pass!) the exams needed to apply for medical residency.

It takes a strong will to succeed, but a quality USMLE prep program will help make sure you won’t be alone on your journey. Here’s a checklist of six key questions to ask if you’re an IMG who’s looking for a USMLE prep program that can help you achieve your goals:

    1. Does the USMLE prep program provide expert instruction?
You want to be taught by a number of award-winning experts who have published research studies and also have decades of collective experience. Look for a team of experts in basic science and clinical, subject integration, and specialty board exams. An elite group of faculty can make all the difference when it comes to prepping for each USMLE Step.

    2. Does the USMLE prep program offer a caring, knowledgeable staff?
A quality prep program will offer a staff that works full-time, so you can focus on getting the highest possible score on the USMLE Steps. The staff should be able to answer your questions thoroughly, provide application advice, and advise you about important policies related to your F-1 Visa status.

    3. Does it give access to IMG-friendly hospitals?
A program that introduces you to IMG-friendly hospitals positions you for greater success. USMLE candidates will be able to seek research posts, observerships, externships, and, ultimately, residency positions from these hospitals.

    4. Does it offer an exceptional environment to learn?
Your environment will play a key part in a successful learning experience. Look for a program that offers accommodations such as group and quiet study spaces, computer labs, student lounges, comfortable classrooms, free wireless internet access, and more.

    5. Will you be able to sightsee?
It’s important to take time off from studying. A good USMLE prep program will be centrally located in world-renowned U.S. cities and help introduce you to wonderful cultural experiences in America.

    6. Does it recommend housing options?
You’ll want to feel like you have a quality home-away-from-home. Look for a program that vets and suggests a range of housing options, from apartments to extended stay hotels.

Bonus Question: Have you considered Kaplan Medical Centers?
The Kaplan Medical Centers answer “yes” to the six questions above and help you achieve medical residency in your chosen medical specialty. The centers are located in six major cities across the United States. They offer IMG students like you access to supportive staff, award-winning instructors, a community of fellow IMG students, networking opportunities, expert advice, and IMG-friendly hospitals.
