A box of human heads was reportedly stolen from a medical supply truck in Denver on Thursday, prompting an appeal for information by local police.

The truck was transferring the remains for medical research and was parked along 23rd Avenue when one or more thieves entered the vehicle, taking a 20 x 15 x 18 inch (50.8 x 38.1 x 45.72 cm) box labeled "Exempt Human Specimen", reports the Denver Post. The remains inside — several human heads — were destined for the body donation authority Science Care, where they would have been used for medical research or science education, the police told AP.

The motives of the thief/thieves are unknown to the police at this time, with neighbors speculating whether they intended to swipe the human heads, or were looking for other medical equipment or supplies, and were in for a nasty surprise when they opened the box after the heist.

"Pretty shocking," one local resident told Fox outlet KDVR-TV. "I guess I don't see too many strange things happening around here usually, but you know, you never know. I would have been so terrified."

Police have urged anyone with information on the theft of the human heads to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers (720) 913-STOP (7867).
