In this study, the cost-effectiveness of routinely prescribing all patients 2 epinephrine autoinjectors (EAI) devices vs. a risk-stratified approach (2 EAI only prescribed for patients with a risk factor) was explored. Researchers used Markov models to compare universal vs. risk-stratified approaches based on either a prior medical history of anaphylaxis (PMH-ana) or anaphylaxis requiring multiple epinephrine doses (multi-epi). This study’s findings demonstrate that at current EAI prices and low rates of needing two devices, limiting second EAI’s to patients with PMH-ana is more cost-effective than routinely prescribing two EAI to all patients (particularly in resource-constrained settings).
