Whether heparin-binding protein has utility in detecting sepsis in patients with presumed systemic infection, was investigated via this systematic review and meta-analysis. By exploring PubMed, Embase, the China National Knowledge infrastructure, and WangFang electronic database, a total of 26 studies with 3,868 patients were identified and analyzed in the meta-analysis. These were cohort and case-control studies which assessed serum concentrations of heparin-binding protein in adult patients with suspected sepsis. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of heparin-binding protein was 0.85 (95% CI, 0.79–0.90) and 0.91 (95% CI, 0.82–0.96), respectively, for the diagnosis of sepsis. Experts found high sensitivity and specificity of heparin-binding protein in predicting progression to sepsis in critically ill patients, and thus its diagnostic ability was found to
    be favorable.
