Did you know that the type of headache you’re experiencing can tell you a lot about your health? One of the most dangerous things you can do is down a couple of paracetamol every few hours – because all it does is mask the pain. You need to know what kind of sensation you’re experiencing to discover the root cause. Throbbing, buzzing and pounding are very different feelings and they all have different sources; some more dangerous than others.

Knowing what you’re dealing with can help you get rid of a headache faster and also help prevent you from getting more in the future. So what are the different types of headache?

Most people don’t know that the majority of headaches are actually caused by muscle tension. The pain generally occurs in your neck and temples and can be quite intense. However, these kinds of headaches aren’t going to endanger your health. So you’re safe to reach for the paracetamol to sooth the pain. However, you should seek medical advice for other types of headache. Find out which ones put you at risk on the next page.

This next type of headache generally affects men more than woman. They’re called “cluster” headaches and come in cycles. They appear suddenly and bring a sharp pain on one side of the head. The cause of these types of headache is unknown, but doctors are able to prescribe medication to reduce the debilitating effects. So if you suffer from this type of headache, there is a cure. Just go to your GP and get treatment.

As I said before, if you take too many meds you are simply masking the root cause. However, if you are taking them all the time, they can actually be the source of your headaches. Believe or not, doctors claim that if you’re taking too much over-the-counter medication – such as aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen – they cause the brain to get excited. As a result it triggers more headaches. They are called “rebounds” and are thought to be withdrawal symptoms from the drugs.

It will not be a surprise to most of you that migraines are on this list. They tend to run in families and can have incredibly debilitating effects. They can be so intense that they sometimes cause dizziness and nausea. Some people also become sensitive to light and sound. These types of headache need to be diagnosed as the doctor can prescribe stronger painkillers that you can’t get over the counter.

If the pain you’re suffering is unbearable, make sure you seek medical advice immediately. Intense headaches could be a symptom of a stroke, meningitis or brain tumour.
