This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to ascertain whether and how splenectomy is associated with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were explored to identify relevant studies. Experts analyzed 8 eligible trials comprising 6,183 participants. CTEPH cases exhibited a prevalence of 4.0% for splenectomy. In subgroup analysis, patients with CTEPH vs those with pulmonary arterial hypertension were found to have a statistically significant high incidence of splenectomy. Patients with CTEPH had a significantly high incidence of splenectomy, relative to those with thromboembolism disease (venous thromboembolism or pulmonary embolism). Thus, findings indicate that CTEPH might be related to splenectomy.
