This study was undertaken to evaluate the relationship of age, gender, and race with renal outcomes in patients with severe sepsis, and septic shock (SEP). A retrospective cohort study of hospitalized patients was conducted in the USA discharged between January 1st, 2005, and December 31st, 2014 applying the National Inpatient Sample. Researchers enrolled a total of 65,772,607 records of which 1,064,790 had SEP. Among patients with SEP, the female gender is correlated with a lower risk of poor renal outcomes and death, while the AA race places patients at higher risk of poor outcomes in that setting. It was reported that elevating age is generally correlated with adverse outcomes.
