Upon first glance, many people assume Hunter Steinitz was at one point badly burned in a fire… but that’s definitely not the case. When Hunter was born, the hospital room went completely silent. Even the doctors were baffled by what they saw. Hunter had thick skin plaque covering her body. She could barely move or breathe, and her eyes and mouth were inverted. Doctors knew something wasn’t right, but they didn’t know what or why. Over the course of the next few months, Hunter’s parents Patti and Mark learned the cause of their daughter’s unusual appearance. She was born with Harlequin Ichthyosis, a super rare genetic condition that causes very thick, red and scaly patches all over her body. People who suffer from Harlequin ichthyosis often wear a wig, are in constant danger of dehydrating, and have limited movements. Doctors told Patti and Mark it was likely that Hunter would pass away during infancy. The Barcroft TV video below was filmed 18 years after Hunter was born. She has now become one of the oldest people in the country living with Harlequin ichthyosis. I guarantee when you see her today, you’ll be inspired by her brightness and bravery. Source
