Doctor accused of sexually motivated examinations

A medical tribunal is to be held into allegations a Lincolnshire breast surgeon performed three sexually motivated examinations on a medical student - two of which were in her bedroom while he wasn't properly clothed.

Dr Alaa Abdel-Rahman is accused of carrying out the examinations on a medical student including an abdominal examination and breast examination.

He works as a locum consultant in breast surgery at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust which runs Pilgrim Hospital, Lincoln County Hospital and Grantham Hospital.

It is alleged that during these examinations Dr Abdel-Rahman failed to offer an appropriate chaperone to the student and that during these examinations he made a number of sexually motivated comments.

It is also alleged that two of the examinations took place in the student's bedroom when Dr Abdel-Rahman was not fully clothed and that during one examination he touched the student inappropriately, according to the tribunal report by the Medical Practitioners' Tribunal Service.

The report also states: "It is further alleged that Dr Abdel-Rahman failed to keep notes relating to these examinations and chaperone decisions."

It is also alleged that Dr Abdel-Rahman asked the student to carry out a hernia examination on him and invited her to examine his groin, and that this was also sexually motivated.

Suneil Kapadia, medical director, at ULHT, said ""The GMC has placed no restriction on Mr Abdel-Rahman's activities, and there have been no matters of concern relating to his practice with patients so is continuing to see and treat patients."

The trust also confirmed all male doctors are chaperoned when carrying out examinations on female patients.

A tribunal is scheduled to take place from June 13 to 24 at St James Street, Manchester.
