Brighton and Campbellford residents can shine a light in the dark of night May 1 to show their appreciation for local doctors.

May 1 is Doctors’ Day and the Ontario Medical Association is promoting a special light shining moment called “Shine A Light For All They Do.” Campbellford Memorial Hospital (CMH) and Docs by the Bay, the physician recruitment and retention program for Brighton and Quinte West, encourage community members to extend their gratitude.

There is no better time to celebrate doctors, who are combating COVID-19 on the frontlines, partners said.

“Docs by the Bay encourages everyone, no matter where they are, to join us at 9 p.m. to celebrate our doctors,” said Paula Mason, manager of physician recruitment and retention for Docs by the Bay.

“All you need to do is turn on the flashlight on your phone and hold it high, through your window, from your balcony, front porch or driveway, for about five minutes.”

Residents can also participate by posting their messages of appreciation to social media using the hashtags #DoctorsDay and #ShineALightForThem.

“The Municipality of Brighton is pleased to recognize its family physicians for the positive difference they make in the lives of their patients, which is essential to our community’s health, especially during the COVID-19 health pandemic,” said Brighton Mayor Brian Ostrander.

The campaign also encompasses a website, www.doctorsday.ca, where people can access shareable social media content and pledge their participation in the May 1 light shining event.
