The neighbours in the Shastrinagar Colony of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh suspected that the doctor may spread coronavirus in the colony owing to his job in the medical college.

Meerut: Amid the coronavirus pandemic in India and other parts of the world, the doctors and other health workers continue to face harassment and discrimination. In a similar incident, a doctor in Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh was allegedly beaten up by his neighbours.

The doctor identified as Prashant Bhatnagar works in the Community Medicine department of the Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College (LLRM) in Meerut.

According to a report in Hindi daily Dainik Jagran, some of the doctor's neighbours beat him up and fractured his hand in the colony at Shastrinagar Sector 6 under Nauchandi Police Station limits.

The report states that the neighbours suspect that the doctor, who lives in the colony for the last seven years, may spread COVID-19 virus due to his job at the City Medical College.

The doctor was regularly harassed over the issue since the lockdown came into effect on March 25.

Meanwhile, police have booked three persons based on the complaint of the victim's father. Earlier, some people also barged into the doctor's home and pressurised him to vacate the rented house.

On Friday, some people put up a security guard's booth at the place where the doctor used to park his car. When he protested the move, the doctor was beaten up and his hand was fractured in the melee.

The city police have booked three colony residents identified as Yaduveer Singh, RS Yadav and Jugal Sahni.

According to City SP, Dr Akhilesh Narayan Singh, "The dispute was over car parking after which a fight broke out. Three people have been booked. The preliminary probe suggest there was no case of spreading coronavirus."
