A population-based study was performed to construct a prognostic model for predicting a severe course of COVID-19. Between March 1, 2020 and May 17, 2020, researchers included 7,455 consecutive patients with COVID-19 who were distinguished by reverse transcription-PCR testing. A very simple prediction model called "covidogram" was developed, based on elementary independent variables and is a highly reliable tool for distinguishing patients at risk of a severe course of COVID-19. Independent negative prognostic factors for severe disease were age, male sex, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, recent history of cancer, chronic heart failure, acid-related disorders treated with proton-pump inhibitors and diabetes mellitus. The role of acid-related disorders treated by proton-pump inhibitors as predictors for a severe course of COVID-19 is a field for future inquiry.
