Two-year-old Kate Gulo is a happy little girl who’s loved by her parents, Teresa and Kenny. By the time she turned 2, though, her parents had begun noticing something odd — something “wobbly” in the way she was moving. Kate had learned to walk before she turned a year old. Before long, she was running, jumping, and dancing. But in a flash, that all began to change. Six months later, her parents discovered that every time Kate would try to stand up straight on her feet, she became abnormally unbalanced. She could still move, but struggled to walk in a straight line. And it just kept getting worse. By October 2016, she could only take a few steps before toppling to the ground. Before long, her parents realized she was falling a whopping 100 times a day. I can’t even imagine that; I can’t imagine how her parents felt. They took her to a specialist, where it was discovered that the cause of Kate’s wobbly condition was a neurological disorder — one so rare, the chances of having it are literally one in a million. Left unchecked, the disorder would gradually take away her ability to crawl, stand, and sit. It made Kate’s hands shaky and caused fits of rage as well. It was devastating — but not all was lost.
