Fitness monitors are all the rage now and are always growing in popularity because of the different functions they offer. They can do all kinds of things unfathomable just a few years ago, like tracking your location or measuring your heart rate.

When she retired, 73-year-old Patricia Lauder purchased a Fitbit to stay healthy and active. Little did she knew that it would do so much more!

For a few weeks, she experienced shortness of breath and fatigue, two very common symptoms that doctors dismissed after tests did not reveal that there was anything wrong with her health. She did not have a cold or pneumonia.

Still, she remained convinced that her sudden decline in energy was not normal. After all, she could barely walk short distances without feeling run down.

Then one day, she glanced down at her Fitbit and noticed that her resting heart rate had been slowly climbing over the previous few days. By the time it reached 140 beats per minute, she knew that something had to be done. She called 911 and was taken to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with blood clots in both lungs. The clots were causing stress on her heart.

Patricia was treated for the condition, and a day later doctors proclaimed her healthy and ready to go home. It was all thanks to her Fitbit, which saved her life.
