The American Academy of Pediatrics is calling for stronger federal food safety requirements, warning families to avoid microwaving and dishwashing plastic containers.

A report issued last month says heating plastics, including bottles in the microwave or running them through a dishwasher, increases the chance of dangerous chemicals being leaked into food.

According to the AAP, an increasing number of studies suggest some food additives can interfere with a child's hormones, growth and development.

Doctors are now calling for stronger food safety requirements from the Food and Drug Administration.

Glass containers or stainless steel packaging is recommended over plastic containers.

You can find more information on the report here.
