In patients with major depression, researchers sought to determine the effectiveness of continuation treatment with lithium to avert relapse after a successful acute course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) vs continuation treatment without lithium. In addition, they examined the role of several study characteristics, possibly affecting the treatment effect. For this systematic review and meta‐analysis, they screened 2,556 records to find 14 articles including 9,748 participants who received continuation treatment either with (N = 1,571) or without lithium (N = 8,177) for inclusion in the meta‐analysis. Findings suggest better effectiveness regarding continuation treatment with lithium vs continuation treatment without lithium for lowering the risk of relapse after a successful acute ECT course for major depression.
