The bad news is that summer is almost over. The good news is that fall — and temperate sweater weather (for much of the country) — is approaching. Chances are that before your tan fades, you’re going to be feeling the strain of practicing medicine and longing for the tiki-soaked beach days of summer. As soon as that feeling takes root, it’s time for a quick recharge with one of these fall weekend getaways. You’re probably thinking, that’s all well and good, but I don’t have time to plan anything like that. Weekend getaways don’t have to be complex undertakings. Sometimes, a change of scenery and a few good meals are all you need to replenish your energy stores. Here are four fall weekend getaways (one for each region of the U.S.), that are easy, fun, and relaxing. Northeast Greensboro, Vermont Located in the heart of Vermont’s picturesque Northeast Kingdom, Greensboro is a natural treasure. Fall is the perfect time for hiking area trails to take in nature and the turning foliage (just be mindful of hunters). Evenings in Greensboro are best spent close to a fire with a good book and your special someone. While you’re reading, sip on craft beer from Hill Farmstead, often cited as the best brewery in America. The brewery takes an inordinate amount of pride in how it sources its ingredients and painstakingly crafts each brew. You can’t go wrong with any of their offerings, from their rich porters and stouts, to funky Farmstead ales (their riffs on traditional Belgian brews), to juicy New England IPAs. While you’re in town, be sure to grab a slice (and some more brews) at Parker Pie and take in the delightful Bread + Puppet Theater and Museum of Everyday Life in nearby Glover. Your best bet will be to find lodging on Airbnb in the remote outpost of Greensboro. Another popular tourist activity in Vermont is a fall foliage train ride. If your trip home or to Greensboro brings you into the area, you can take in the turning leaves from the rails in Chester, Vermont. Midwest Mackinac Island, Michigan With about 500 year-round residents, Mackinac Island is a quaint, peaceful piece of vacation paradise, situated on beautiful Lake Huron right between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Setting foot onto the island after the ferry ride is like stepping into another time. Local ordinances prohibit most motor vehicles, with horses and bikes being the preferred modes of transportation for most. The historically inclined will enjoy touring Fort Mackinac, built by the British during the American Revolution, as well as the numerous Victorian-style homes. You should also be sure to rent a bike upon arrival, as it’s the best way to see the sites. The island features several well-reviewed spas, for optimal relaxation, and numerous shops to peruse (don’t miss the fudge). In keeping with the general Victorian theme, we recommend staying at the Grand Hotel, which has hosted presidents Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ford, Kennedy, and Truman, to name a few. South Asheville, North Carolina Asheville offers the perfect balance of urban arts and culture without being too far from nature. Situated in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville has a thriving arts and culinary scene as well as outdoor adventures. A delicious meal, craft beer, or carefully brewed cup of coffee is never far away. While in Asheville, do not miss Buxton Hall BBQ. Follow the intoxicating smell of woodsmoke to find it. Whatever you order, be sure that a side of green beans cooked under the BBQ pig comes with it. Asheville is another U.S. beer mecca. Check out this list of options. We recommend the OG Green Man and Burial Beer Co. Stay at the Hyatt Place Asheville/Downtown for the sweeping views of the mountains. While you’re there, be sure to have a drink at the rooftop Montford Rooftop Bar. They do not accept reservations, so arrive early to get a good seat to take in the scenery. West Joshua Tree National Park, California Fall is the preferred time to visit Joshua Tree National Park. For one thing, it’s cooler in the desert this time of year, with temperatures typically in the 80s. Also, with school back in session, you’ll run into fewer large groups of families and children — perfect for quality alone time or time spent with your special someone. Novice hikers will appreciate the journey to Arch Rock. The hike in isn’t demanding, and it offers opportunities to explore the terrain. Rock climbers will enjoy the multiple grades offered in Hidden Valley, though novice or rookie climbers should probably just watch. And to get a feel for the old West, be sure to check out Lost Horse Mine. Camping is the best way to experience Joshua Tree. But if camping isn’t your style, then there are hotel options at various price points. TL;DR Escape to these fall weekend getaways: Greensboro, Vermont for seclusion and great beer in the wilderness Mackinac Island, Michigan for quaint, Victorian charm Asheville, North Carolina for a thriving culinary and arts scene that isn’t far from nature Joshua Tree National Park for a breathtaking dessert experience, free of summer crowds Source
