Although current guidelines recommend lowering salt intake in patients with diabetes, the benefits of reducing salt intake in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) lack clear evidence, researchers conducted a systematic search of the online databases that assessed the impact of dietary sodium restriction on BP in patients with T2DM. By 24 h urinary sodium excretion (UNaV), sodium intake was expressed. Dietary sodium restriction significantly decreased UNaV compared with ordinary sodium intake. Sodium restriction significantly reduced systolic BP and diastolic BP with low heterogeneity among the studies. In T2DM patients, sodium restriction lowers SBP and DBP significantly.
