Energy drinks such as Red Bull could act as a “gateway” to cocaine, scientists claim.

A study found 21 to 25-year-olds who drank large amounts of the sugar and caffeine-filled products were much more likely to get hooked on the drug.

The findings were published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

And they were at greater risk of alcohol abuse and using amphetamines and other stimulants within five years.

Amelia Arria, of Maryland University, said: “This study gives evidence of a specific contribution of energy drink consumption to later substance use.”

Of the 1,099 participants more than half drank large amounts over a long time — and were far more likely to use drugs and abuse alcohol.
