Hundreds of different surgical instruments have been invented that enable surgeons to operate effectively, efficiently and, ultimately, to save lives. Many surgical instruments are highly specialized and specific. However, a core group of surgical instruments is utilized in almost all

    Scalpel
A scalpel is a surgical cutting knife. It is used to make the surgical incision through the skin, and may be used to trim or remove tissues. The scalpel has two parts: the handle and the blade. Blades come in a variety of sizes and shapes.

    Scissors
Many types of scissors are used in general surgery, depending on what is being cut and where it is located. Surgical scissors can be straight, curved or angled to fit into different areas. The length of the scissor blades varies as does the length of the entire instrument. The tips of surgical scissors can be sharp, blunt or a combination of both.

    Artery Forceps
Forceps have the basic construction of scissors, but instead of blades, the two end pieces come together for grasping. Artery forceps, also known as hemostats, are specifically designed to grasp and compress arteries. They have a locking mechanism that allows the surgeon to place the hemostat on an artery and leave it in place while performing other parts of the surgery. The locking mechanism is easily released when the surgeon decides to do so. These instruments are critically important in controlling bleeding in the surgical field.

    Holding Forceps
Holding forceps have three-dimensional shaped ends that are designed to hold specific organs or tissues. They open and close with a scissor-like mechanism. Many types of holding forceps are used in general surgery including intestinal, gallbladder and bone forceps.

    Needle Holders
Needle holders are a special type of clamp used to hold the needle for sewing stitches. These instruments have a locking mechanism to ensure that the needle is not dropped in the surgical field.

    Retractors
Retractors keep the surgical field open, and to hold back tissues that may otherwise obscure the area. Different types of retractors are used for different tissues and organs including abdominal, pelvic, skin and thoracic retractors.

    Probes
Probes are slender metal instruments with blunt ends used to explore the depth of a wound, cavity or other opening without risking injury to the area. Typically, they are roughly the same diameter as the lead in a wooden pencil. The ends may have a gentle curve. Probes come in different lengths to accommodate the differing depths of tissues that may need to be explored.

    Suction
Every surgery involves some amount of bleeding. A suction device is used to remove blood and other liquids from the surgical field. A variety of sizes and styles of suction tips are available to accommodate the anatomy of the surgical field.

    Electrocautery Instrument
An electrocautery instrument is used to stop bleeding from capillaries (small blood vessels), and may be used to cut through fat tissue. When the device is activated, electricity flows through the metal tip of the instrument, creating heat. The heat causes a small burn that stops bleeding without causing significant harm to the surrounding tissues. An electrocautery instrument is sometimes called a bovie.
