The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria is identified as a robust vertical global health program. Researchers here sought to determine the extent to which the budgets of this vertical program support health security, considering it as a critical area of work as the global community works to integrate resources for COVID-19 response and future pandemic preparedness. The research team reviewed 37 budgets for work in Kenya, Uganda, Vietnam, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guatemala, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. Analyses suggest that health security is also supported by over one-third of the Global Fund's work and the organization has budgeted more than $2,500,000,000 for activities that support health security in ten countries since 2014. Although budgeting of these funds was not done specifically for health security purposes, identifying how vertical programs can synergistically support other global health efforts has significant implications for policy related to health systems strengthening.
