In an amazing feat of survival, a horrifically injured teen walked a quarter of a mile to safety holding his semi-decapitated head after fighting off a gang of murderous thugs.

Video footage shot by police in south Brazil shows a mutilated 18-year-old Pablo Patrik de Souza hold his head upright as he attempted to keep it in one position.

He was found by emergency services on Monday sitting by the roadside in Ponta da Vigia, Penha.

A knife had sliced almost halfway through his neck, exposing tissue and muscle.

Despite being nearly beheaded, the teen appeared calm and lucid as he explained to his rescuers what happened.

According to the Mr Patrik de Souza, he was ambushed on Sunday night around 8pm by three bandits who robbed his trainers and mobile.

He tried to fight them off but they overpowered him and in a savage assault, sawed through his neck in an attempt to behead him.

His barbarous assailants then threw him into a ravine in a wooded area and left him for dead.

But the resilient victim said he managed to survive by pretending to be dead and hiding in the woods overnight holding his semi-severed head as he feared his attackers would return.

In the morning, he walked to the roadside where he was found by an off-duty firefighter who alerted emergency services.

As shocked officers waited for an ambulance to arrive one asked the victim why he was assaulted.

'Did they do this to you because you are in debt over drugs or something similar?' he asks.

Mr Patrik de Souza replied: 'No they came to rob me and I fought back. I punched one in the face and they tried to kill me.'

He was taken to the Marieta Konder Bornhausen hospital in Itajai where he underwent life-saving surgery.

No further updates have been given about the state of his health.

Police said they are hunting for the perpetrators and expect to make arrests with the help of the victim
