Hand strength (and forearm) is one of the keys of having steady hands. Not bulking bodybuilder type strength per say but stamina in repetitive movements. Hand strengthening devices, especially ones that allow you to adjust the tensions and select single finger movements can improve hand strength-stamina greatly. There a a number of activities that improve hand stamina; typing, needlepoint, piano or other finger intensive instrument, etc.

If that does not improve steadiness within 90 days - assuming a near-zealot adherence to training one’s stamina and strength in their hands and forearms, then it is time to explore other externalities and internalities causing tremor of unsteadiness.

Caffeine, Theophylline and a host of drugs can increase sub-clinical tremors in the hand. Even diet can be a cause of increased tremor - realize if one were not a surgeon or other professional in need of ultrafine, ultra steady movements under a microscope (surgeons get to see theri steadiness under 4x, 8x magnification sometimes). Identifying and eliminating sources of these substances whether part of the diet or taken in addition to the diet can improve sub-clinical essential tremoring.

While strengthening one’s hands a forearms is a good thing in relation to steadiness, too much of a good thing can cause shaking hands. Some surgeons who body build have to give up the sport to some extent to find a happy medium of body image and performance with a scalpel. Also, many ‘athlete’ surgeons find the supplements they utilize often are the source of the external substance that is causing their issue.

If you are in the medical procedural field and want help with steadiness - quietly find a good occupational therapist and ask what exercises would be appropriate to help strengthen the hand and forearm specifically to reduce hand unsteadiness.

    Best of luck to you,

    ~Chris
