Some may say that getting rid of a pimple is easy. However, if you are not careful enough with the process, these just keep popping back up. What you need is a long-term solution to ensure that you have successfully eliminated pimple marks and acne scars.

Before we talk about how some of the top dermatologists from around the world have shared their best advice on dealing with these from prevention to treatment, it is best to start with pointing out the difference between pimple marks and acne scars.

Keep in mind that a mark, be it dark or pink on the skin is not an acne scar. Instead, it is an inflammation on the skin. Our skin would often do this as part of its healing process. The inflammation would then rev up some kind of pigmentation that most people would assume to be a pimple.

On the other hand, acne scars enter the picture when there is already abnormal collagen production. Acne scars can either be depressed or raised.

    1. Sunscreen

According to Sejal Shah, MD, dark marks would typically fade over time. However, you can speed up the process for treating this hyperpigmentation by using sunscreen and loading up on vitamin C.

    2. Steroid injections

Steroid shots may be a good option at times when the head of the pimple is already showing. The best part about utilizing this option is that you can administer it on the same day. The process is very fast and it immediately reduces the inflammation of the said zit.

    3. Lasers

At times, dermatologists would often use lasers to remodel collagen. The thing with lasers is that it won’t eliminate those acne scars completely. In fact, it can only improve them by 30 percent. “These can be helpful in reducing the redness associated with acne marks and scars,” as explained by Dr. Woolery-Lloyd.

    4. Dermal fillers

There are some scars that can be treated by filling them up so that the depressed areas are elevated. Dermal fillers make use of hyaluronic acid to eliminate any shadows and brighten up the skin.

Moreover, you can use Bellafill, the very first FDA-approved dermal filler. As compared to other dermal fillers, these can help improve acne scarring. "It's 20% polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), which helps your body make more protein to allow itself to heal," as shared by Dr. Shah.
