    Hypernatremia :

    Causes :

    - Loss Of water in excess of Na

    - Retention of large quantities of Na

    Symptoms :

    -Restlessness, lethargy, hyper-reflexia, seizures and coma

    Treatment :

    correction of water deficits with hypotonic solution such as 5% D/W over 48 hr

    -decreased volume of distribution of anesthetic drugs --> should decrease doses of drugs

    Hyponatremia :

    Causes :

    - Loss Of Na in excess of water

    - water retention

    Symptoms :

    -Anorexia, nausea, weakness

    -Neurologic: cerebral edema, lethargy, confusion, seizures and coma

    Treatment :

    - water restriction

    - Na replacement
