As part of an intensive weeklong boot camp to prepare fourth-year medical students who have matched into a surgical residency, the Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery will hold a “Surgical Olympics.” Students will rotate through three stations (rated for time and accuracy), hang out in the “Olympic Village” between stations, and wrap up with a Jeopardy-style match. The stations: Three Strikes and You’re Time Out: patient identification and time out (safety checklist) in OR—students cycling through cards with cases on them Staplechase: placing and removing skin staples on latex skins Dress Yourself/Smokin’: students prepare OR electrocautery, then gown and glove themselves What: Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery’s “Surgical Olympics” Fourth-year Johns Hopkins medical students compete to perform basic surgical skills in a timed fashion.
