Several of Mehedi Hasan Faruk's classmates said he was frustrated due to being unable to pass the final professional exam for the past five years. A student from the 17th batch of Comilla Medical College committed suicide on April 4. This is the fourth time in four months that a medical college student has committed suicide. Sources said that the student, Mehedi Hasan Faruk, hanged himself in his own home. Several of his classmates said Faruk was frustrated due to being unable to pass the final professional exam for the past five years. He allegedly committed suicide due to that reason. The admin of a Facebook page for doctors Marufur Rahman Opu wrote: “Faruk was probably my batch mate or a year junior to me. He was supposed to pass his MBBS in 2012-2013. He passed all other courses required to pass MBBS. But one subject, medicine, he did not manage to pass in the last 5 years. He gave the exam 11 times, and failed. “I am not willing to pass this off as suicide. This is murder. A student passed all the subjects in his MBBS curriculum but failed in one subject 11 times in five years – this is simply not possible. The institution and his teachers should take responsibility for this. Is it only up to the student to pass or should the institution be held responsible as well?” he wrote. Marufur Rahman Opu also said each year, medical students are committing suicide. The institution should be held accountable for this; there should be emotional and mental support for the students as well. Departmental head of Neurosurgery at Chittagong Medical College Dr Noman Khaled Chowdhury said: “If a student fails a subject 11 times, while passing all other subjects, the management should be questioned and held accountable. Teachers and examiners should not be excused when it comes to accountability. We have to question the current system of examination as well.” He also said: “In my opinion, the authorities should conduct a thorough investigation. The medical college students should formally present a complaint to the principal, dean of medicine faculty, and the Health Ministry.” Medical Officer Mohammad Asaduzzaman wrote: “There are many examples of students failing due to reasons that are not their fault. A student from M Abdur Rahim Medical College and Hospital in Dinajpur could not pass the anatomy exam in five years. His friends are doing their internships now. He later shifted to Pabna Medical College. Hopefully he will pass the exam now.” Contacted, Comilla Medical College vice-principal Dr Jahangir Hossain Bhuiyan said: “I do not know about the matter. I will look into it.” Mehedi Hasan Faruk, second from right, with friends Source
