A special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSOA) court on Friday convicted and sentenced a 23-year-old medical student to 10 years' jail for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl on the pretext of teaching her about anatomy two years ago. The accused, Mahavir Mishra, who was denied bail since his arrest, was granted permission to appear for his medical exams on previous occasions. The judgment was pronounced by special judge Chanda Nathani. The prosecution examined 11 witnesses, including the survivor who testified against the accused and identified him in court. The survivor used to visit Mishra's house and his sister was her tutor. According to the girl's mother, who is the complainant in the case, on August 6, 2014, when her daughter didn't return home from tuitions at 10 pm, she went to Mishra's house and found her crying. On prodding, the girl told her mother that as the other four students had come in the morning for tuitions and her tutor was out, the latter's mother told her to wait on the terrace. The girl said that when she was on the terrace, Mishra sexually assaulted her on the pretext of teaching her science. The girl's mother filed a police complaint and Mishra was arrested the same night. Source
