Medical student syndrome "MSS" also named medical student disorder, medical student disease and hypochondriasis of medical students is a condition frequently reported in medical students nowadays. MSS is a constellation of psychiatric symptoms that affect the mood and behaviour of a medical student, especially during the first year of studying medicine. While Medical students are learning medicine they read lists of symptoms for different diseases daily. Although they are completely healthy, they feel that they are suffering from the symptoms of specific diseases and they have it. For example: If a medical student is reading about swine flu he may feel its symptoms and do unnecessary laboratory tests to confirm his wrong diagnosis. Now the disease included millions of non medical students who can easily search in the internet about any disease and believe in having its symptoms. If you suffered from this syndrome before share with us your experience through writing your comment here. Faculty Of Medicine
The worst of my medical years experience is when exams are closing in and u realize u have gone through everything and yet u can't remember any or cant put what u know together in a simple straight forward answer u feel disappointed, discouraged, let down and start to wonder why did u get into med school in the first place when all ur high school friends are already working and making their own living when they chose a different path... start to wonder "is medicine what u really want?" ill leave u to answer that question
It happened to me in two times and it was very funny, the firts time, i was reading something about dyspnea and when i started to read i was good, but after reading i had breathing problems..XD And the second time it was'n funny, I was reading something about parasites and then i thought that all that i wanted to eat was contaminated.
I experienced it twice. During my 1st Family Medicine postings, i had learned about hemoptysis and the very next day i was diagnosed with it. During my ENT postings, i was seeing many patients with pharyngitis and a week later, i had to see my professor just to be diagnosed with it... wonder how easily it gets on me!!
I suffered from this syndrome when I was reading about gastrointestinal diseases , I though that I have all the diseases of GIT LOL
me 2.. whenever i read about parasites.. i think all food and my lovely cats around me have the infective stages..
for now i am just first year med student ,& i am working from now to avoid "med student syndrome " because i think its all in mind and being known of the obstacle make it easy to undergo when it comes. and maybe find strategyes to this syndrome like reading to adoll instead of reading to myself
Never experienced anything like that...maybe cause I am so optimistic... Anxiety and nervosity before exams...Even with that cope I pretty well, my mother once told me : " If you can say to yourself that you done everything, what was possible, than it´s in God hands, and there is no need to be nervous"...So I´m trying hard and waiting for results...
That's dear when you start to take medical study you fell each and every things are contamineted hahaha!!!
