High-flying City executives prone to outbreaks of facial blushing during important meetings or presentations are turning to an unlikely remedy - sheep’s placenta.

Doctors say sheep’s placenta contains protein-rich anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce skin redness caused by flushing.

And as news spreads of its benefits in the boardroom, demand for the cream has risen by 25 per cent over the last six months.

Peter Finigan, medical director of Dr Newmans Clinic, a nationwide clinic which specialises in treating facial thread veins and rosacea, said: 'It is proving very popular with many of our patients facing high-pressured situations in the corporate world, who tell us they are worried that blushing makes them look anxious or inexperienced.

'Using this cream they can appear more calm and collected. It is protein-rich and has anti-inflammatory properties that are excellent at reducing skin redness.

Dr Finigan advises his patients to use the cream, which contains 10 per cent sheep’s placenta - and costs £55 for a 50ml pot - before stressful events.

However, he stresses the cream alone cannot ‘cure’ more serious rosacea or larger facial thread veins, but is effective in lessening mild redness caused by the surge of adrenaline, — which increases blood flow to the face — affecting millions of people.

Last year, clinics within Harvey Nichols in London and Edinburgh became the first in the UK to offer £185 facials using stem-cells from sheep’s placenta.

While Simon Cowell and Victoria Beckham are reportedly fans of its anti aging properties, visiting Beverly Hills dermatologists for 90-minute 'placenta facials'.

According to one study, carried out by AMA Laboratories, an independent testing company based in New York, products containing sheep placenta reduced the redness and inflammation associated with rosacea by up to 40 per cent in almost 80 per cent of participants, within 28 days.

Dr Finigan added: 'Some patients are fanatical about using it. One woman even postponed her wedding when she had run out of the cream as she was worried that she would have a red face in her wedding pictures,' he added.

The rise reflects a wider trend with increasing numbers of men requesting cosmetic treatment. Much of this rise has been fuelled by businessmen keen to reduce the negative connotation that facial red veins - dubbed 'boozers nose' - have with clients and colleagues.
