A drunken doctor in India delivered a woman’s baby by Caesarean section, leading to the death of the mother and the newborn, according to reports. Kaminiben Chanchiya, 22, was admitted to the government-run Sonawala Hospital in the city of Botad in Gujarat on Monday night with labor pains, India Today reported . Dr. PJ Lakhani, a senior doctor who has been working at the hospital for the past 15 years, performed an emergency C-section on the woman, according to the BBC. The baby was declared dead soon after the operation and the woman died shortly after, prompting the victim’s family to accuse the doctor of negligence, reports said. Police said Lakhani was administered a test that confirmed he was drunk. “The police found that the doctor was drunk while on duty. He was first booked under the Prohibition Act and was arrested. His blood sample was sent for testing,” said Botad Superintendent of Police Harshad Mehta, according to India Today. An autopsy will be performed on Chanchiya to determine the cause of death. According to local media, Chanchiya’s family was told of the newborn’s death while Chanchiya was bleeding profusely, the BBC reported. Authorities are investigating whether the deaths were caused by negligence or other medical reasons, the news outlet reported. Source
