    Study conducted at Cleveland Clinic

"Physician burnout" may not be all that uncommon, according to a new study.

Appearing in JAMA Internal Medicine, 35% of physicians at the Cleveland Clinic met the criteria on the Maslach Burnout Inventory, which includes emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, and overall burnout. Emotional exhaustion was tied to the highest probability of leaving an organization, while depersonalization was linked to the greater odds of ombudsman complaints. Emotional exhaustion of the provider was also correlated with higher rates of patient satisfaction with primary care physician's communication.

"Routine assessment of burnout by healthcare organizations is warranted to identify the need for additional individual and organizational support," the authors recommended.
