Medical marijuana's ever-changing status in the United States has been well documented. Though it is now legal in many US states, it remains a divisive issue in the country. Indeed it was only on Wednesday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has been a consistently vocal critic of the recreational use of marijuana, went further still in his disapproval of the drug, casting doubt over those who use medical marijuana.

"I think medical marijuana has been hyped, maybe too much" said the Attorney General, "Dosages can be constructed in a way that might be beneficial, I acknowledge that, but if you smoke marijuana for example, where you have no idea how much THC you're getting, it's probably not a good way to administer a medical amount. So forgive me if I'm a bit dubious about that."

The health implications of smoking marijuana recreationally are still very much open to debate and many countries still class the drug as illegal, including Patrick Stewart's native Great Britain. The X-men actor, though, has come out in vocal support of some cannabis-based products that he has used in his personal life.

Sir Patrick Stewart has been the internet's best friend of late, after introducing the world to his foster dog, Ginger, on Twitter in an adorable video that had everybody crowing in delight. The relationship between the renowned actor and his dog has quickly become the stuff on internet legend, and Stewart even spent a segment on popular late night talk show Conan effusing over his new best friend.

Now, he has been telling all about his own personal experiences with cannabis-based products as medicine.

"Two years ago, in Los Angeles, I was examined by a doctor and given a note which gave me legal permission to purchase, from a registered outlet, cannabis-based products, which I was advised might help the ortho-arthritis in both my hands. This, it would seem, is a genetically-based condition. My mother had badly distorted and painful hands.

"I purchased an ointment, spray and edibles. The ointment, while providing some relief from the discomfort, was too greasy to use during daytime and so I only use it at night."

Sir Patrick Stewart then went on to talk about the perceived benefits of the products he has been using.

"It helps with sleep as the pain was reduced. The spray, however, is much more usable and I spray my fingers and particularly my thumb joints several times a day.

"The spray very quickly evaporates and leaves my hands quite dry, though with a slight burning or tingling sensation, which is not unpleasant. I believe that the ointment and spray have significantly reduced the stiffness and pain in my hands. I can make fists, which was not the case before I began this treatment."

It seems like the products have been working well for Stewart, and advocates of medical marijuana will be delighted to hear such a respected and revered voice speaking up in support of them.

Sir Patrick Stewart is currently starring in the final film of the Wolverine franchise, Logan, which co-star Hugh Jackman had previously confirmed would be his last with the wildly popular series of movies. Stewart also made headlines earlier this year when he claimed that he was seeking American citizenship so that he could fight back against United States President Donald Trump.

"There is one thing you can do. Fight, fight; oppose, oppose. But I can't do it because I'm not a citizen." He told The View early in March. Stewart, who has born in Mirfield in West Yorkshire, currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife Sunny Ozell.
