Researchers investigated the prevalence as well as the predictors of thyroid disorders in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients in this case–control analysis. This study involved 998 T2DM patients vs 343 non-diabetic persons as controls. Overall 1,341 participants with mean age ± SD of 60.14 ± 12.21 were analyzed. Findings showed T2DM patients had a high prevalence of thyroid disorders. Thus, performing routine screening for thyroid dysfunction in patients with diabetes was advised by experts. The factors that conferred risk for thyroid dysfunction in T2DM patients were: old age, female gender, goiter, and poorly controlled diabetes. Via appropriate management as well as control of diabetes, a lowering of the risk of thyroid dysfunction and vice versa may be achieved.

Consequently, appropriate management and control of diabetes may lower the risk of thyroid dysfunction and
    vice versa.
