Since patients with obesity are at greater risk for community-acquired and nosocomial infections, researchers intended to determine if there is an association between obesity, defined as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 at ICU admission, and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Thyis is a post-hoc analysis of the NUTRIREA-2 open-label RCT, conducted in 44 French ICUs. Adults undergoing invasive mechanical ventilation and vasopressor support for shock, and parenteral nutrition or enteral nutrition were involved. Six hundred ninety-nine (30%) out of 2,325 included patients were deemed obese. Data reported that the incidence of VAP at day 28 was 8.6% vs 10.1% in the two groups, and even after adjustment, the incidence of VAP was non-significant between obese and non-obese patients. The findings indicate that obesity does not have a substantial effect on VAP incidence.
