Two doctors have been immediately stood down over allegations of sexual assault against two female medical students at Royal Darwin Hospital.

The hospital's director of medical services, Alison Maclean, said both of the alleged incidents happened at the hospital and involved two male doctors both from the same medical department.

"They were in the same division but the two incidents don't appear to have been related — different students, different doctors — and unfortunately we have no timeframe," she said.

The women reported the sexual assaults to staff at Flinders University, but the allegations are not yet being investigated by police.

"We have not referred the matter to police as we don't have the names of the students or when the incidents occurred," Dr Maclean said.

"Naturally the students are feeling they want to protect themselves so we are hoping Flinders University will encourage them to make a referral to police."

Future Flinders University student placements have been suspended as a result, as a full investigation is carried out.

Dr Maclean said those already on placement have been placed into new departments at the hospital and will be given counselling.

She is urging any student who feels they have been the victim of inappropriate behaviour to report their concerns to staff or police.
