This haunting CCTV shows the moment a young Russian woman brazenly walked out of a hospital with a baby she had kidnapped.

The medical student identified as Yekaterina M, 23, went into a postnatal ward of a hospital in Belgorod on Thursday morning, removed the feeding tube from a premature newborn and walked out with the baby in her arms.

Surveillance footage shot in the hospital lobby shows the young woman entering the building holding a clearly heavy green bag.

Ten minutes later she is seen walking out of the hospital with the baby in her arms.

Far from going unnoticed, a couple waiting by the lift look straight at the baby and coo, before smiling at each other.

The baby's real mother, also 23, had been discharged a few hours earlier, but the baby remained in the postnatal unit for further treatment.

It had been initially reported that Yekaterina M had given birth to a stillborn baby, but it has since emerged that she had pretended to be pregnant to fool her family.

When she arrived home, Bloknot reports, the kidnapper had a cot, stroller and baby clothes already bought.

Yekaterina M then posted a photo of herself with the baby on social media with the caption: "Everything will be cool".

Police and hospital staff initially believed the real baby's family had snuck the newborn out early, but before they had started a wider investigation, the kidnapper's family had already grown suspicious and reported her.

If she is deemed mentally fit to stand trial, Yekaterina M could face a long prison sentence.

The baby is now back in hospital and, according to doctors, is in a satisfactory condition.

The hospital has now vowed to tighten security.
