Keri McCartney was 23 weeks expectant when she went for ultrasound accompanied by her husband and four kids. What they wanted to know was the gender of the unborn baby. Everyone expected good news with a lot of anxiety, but it turned out to be their darkest day as she was told that she would have to deliver the same baby twice. At the hospital, it was discovered by the doctors that the unborn baby was having some growth the size of a grapefruit. This growth had blood vessels and was diverting the blood meant for the baby. Even though the tumor was not cancerous, it posed a threat to the baby and the mom. Doctors revealed that the condition was rare and it only happened once in 40,000 births. The family went to Texas Children’s Fetal Center, so that Keri would be done some prenatal surgery. The baby had a 10% chance to live from the possible 100%. The surgeons removed the growth by cutting through the abdomen of Keri and getting the whole uterus and a part of the baby’s body. This was done without touching the placenta. Dr. Otlutoye revealed that they had to remove part of the baby because if they would have removed it completely, the uterus would have interpreted that it was birth that was taking place. The doctors managed to return the baby back in the womb.
