Researchers examined the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension in correlation with smoking cessation and postcessation weight gain. Participants were 96,524 people without diabetes mellitus and hypertension aged ≥ 20 years between 2006 and 2008, who were observed until December 31, 2015. For 2 years, smoking status as well as weight alterations were monitored. A decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes was observed in relation to smoking cessation with no subsequent weight gain. However, the reduced risk of type 2 diabetes was attenuated by weight gain post-smoking cessation. There was a nonsignificant link between recent quitting and incident hypertension, whereas decreased risk of developing hypertension and type 2 diabetes was observed in long-term quitters. Source
