    U.S. News & World Report released a preview of its annual 2018 Best Graduate Schools rankings, including the top medical schools for research and primary care.

    To compile the rankings, U.S. News surveyed 170 fully accredited medical and osteopathic schools. The full rankings for the 2018 Best Graduate Schools, available March 14, surveyed more than 1,970 graduate schools and programs.

    Here are the top 10 medical schools for research, listed in alphabetical order.

    1. Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (New York City)
    2. Duke University School of Medicine (Durham, N.C.)
    3. Harvard Medical School (Boston)
    4. The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (Baltimore)
    5. Stanford (Calif.) University School of Medicine
    6. UC San Francisco Medical School
    7. The Medical School at University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
    8. Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia)
    9. Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis)
    10. Yale School of Medicine (New Haven, Conn.)
    Here are the top 10 medical schools for primary care, listed in alphabetical order. The list includes ties.

    1. Baylor College of Medicine (Houston)
    2. Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine (Portland)
    3. David Geffen School of Medicine at UC Los Angeles
