Sex has long been known to reduce stress levels and it may burn calories, but a new study suggests regular intercourse may actually make our brains more alert and intelligent, too. According to the study, conducted by scientists at the University of Pavia, Italy, people who had sex daily were more likely to increase nerve growth in their brains, The Daily Mail reports. A higher level of cranial nerve growth is linked to greater health benefits such as mental alertness and increased memory among individuals — this was especially true for couples who had just fallen in love. In their analysis, researchers examined blood tests from three groups of couples: those who were newly dating and in love, those in long-term relationships and singletons. Researchers found nerve growth was “significantly higher in subjects in love than in either the subjects with long-lasting relationships or the subjects with no relationships,” but the longer a couple stayed together, the more their levels dropped. From these results, scientists deduced that our brain power is strongest early in relationships, especially if we have active sex lives. These findings are supported by a separate Princeton University study in which one group of male rats were limited to sexual activity only once during a two week period, while another group of male rats were allowed to engage in daily copulation. The rats who engaged in sexual activity regularly, exhibited an increase in nerve cell growth and a reduction in stress levels. These findings are particularly interesting for Canadians, as last month a Playtex study showed that Canadians generally have healthy sex lives as 33% of dating couples said they enjoyed a romp in the sheets a few times a week, 35% of married couples admitted to having sex only a few times a month and an adventurous 8% said they’ve done the deed in a canoe. Other health benefits of having regular sex include: better testosterone levels, lower blood pressure and fewer menopause symptoms among women. And although the University of Pavia study found that the benefits of sex on the brain were most prevalent among new lovers, its benefits for long-term couples and older people are what intrigued the study authors: “There is some evidence that older people who are sexually active are less likely to have dementia,” one of the lead researchers on the Italy study explained. “And this could be for a variety of complex reasons.” Source
