In incident rheumatoid arthritis (RA), researchers conducted this study for assessing secular trends in 10-year risk of incident cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) relative to the general population. Using administrative health data, they performed a retrospective study of a population-based incident cohort with RA onset from 1997 to 2004 in British Columbia, Canada, with matched general population controls (2:1). Overall, 23,545 RA and 47,090 general population had 658 and 1,220 incident CVAs, respectively. The results show that people with RA onset from 1999 onwards had a substantially higher decrease in the 10-year incidence of CVA relative to the general population.
